Background Older people, natives as well as immigrants, are a heterogeneous group, and when care is needed it is important to obtain knowledge about how to deliver it on the basis of their needs. According to the Swedish Government Official Reports [1], older immigrants are under-represented in public home health care and special accommodation. There are variations due to country of birth: whereas people from Northern Europe use public care, in accordance with native Swedes, while older people from non-European countries show a lower utilization of public care [1]. In a European perspective, Bollini and Siem's review [2] indicated barriers to health care and under-utilization of social service among immigrants in some European countries. Knowledge about the older immigrants' situation is, however, sparse.
